Corky’s sudden death due to Covid-19 is a devastating loss for anyone fortunate enough to know him and for all the communities he tirelessly documented and advocated for.
It was a privilege to follow him for close to 20 years on his mission to pursue “photographic justice.” Corky empowered generations of people to be proud of their heritage and see beyond stereotypes. I learned so much from him and am so honored that he trusted me to tell his story. He was an icon in the community and whenever he hosted one of his many exhibits, it was always sure to be a lively celebration that gathered people from all walks of life. I miss him dearly.
Myself and my team hope this film will help to preserve a lasting legacy for this incredible individual. We are deeply appreciative of all the support over the years from individuals, organizations and corporations.
This photo was taken at Corky's last exhibit in October 2020, "Chinatown Photo Newsstand with Corky Lee and LESPI." The event was organized by THINKCHINATOWN.ORG .
